USDA Issues Recall of Great Value Breakfast Sausage Products Over Salmonella Concerns

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued a recall of more than 6,400 pounds of frozen meat product out of concern for potential salmonella contamination.  These fully-cooked, frozen meat products were made by George’s Prepared Foods and sold at Walmart under the Great Value brand.  The recall comes after a small group of the meat products tested positive for salmonella but still shipped to stores across the country.

Great Value Fully Cooked Original Pork Sausage Patties in the 24.92-oz size. This product will have lot code 1091971894 and a use-by date of 10/16/2019.

Great Value Fully Cooked Original Breakfast Turkey Patties, also in the 24.92-oz size.  This product will have lot code 1171971897 and a use-by date of 10/24/2019.

Family Size Great Value Fully Cooked Original Pork Sausage Patties in the 35.6-oz size. This product will have lot codes 1271972894 or 1291972894 with a use-by date of either 11/03/2019 or 11/05/2019.

It should also be noted that all packages in the recall will have “EST. M2206T” or “P-2260T” printed on them.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of salmonella infection from any of these products.  As such, the USDA advises that anyone who may be in possession of these products should throw them out or take them back to the place of purchase.

Salmonella symptoms can appear a bit like the flu:  fever and abdominal cramping with occasional diarrhea.  These symptoms can appear between 12 and 72 hours after consuming the contaminating product; and can last up to one week. Salmonella infection is typically mild and most people recover after a week or without the need for medical treatment.

At the same time, the diarrhea symptoms can be more severe. This will lead to a greater need for treatment, often requiring hospitalization.  And in these more severe cases the infection may spread from the intestines into the bloodstream, which can carry it to the rest of the body.
