Jennie-O Issues Raw Ground Turkey Salmonella Recall

Poultry company Jennie-O has announced a recall of 82 tons of raw ground turkey over possible salmonella contamination. This recall is actually part of an existing investigation into 216 salmonella cases across 38 states. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 84 people have already been hospitalized as a result of infection. These patients have reported eating various types of brands of turkey products, all of which purchased at different stores, handling raw turkey pet food and/or raw turkey, or working with live turkeys (or living with someone who works with live turkeys).

Diving further into the data, the 38 cases include 9 in New Jersey. The New Jersey Department of Health list 2 cases each in Essex, Mercer, and Middlesex counties and a single case in Hudson, Monmouth, and Ocean counties.

The CDC now warns, of course, that Jennie-O ground turkey products may not be the only brand affected. Indeed, other brands may be recalled in the future, as the investigation continues.
Speaking of the recall, it was originally opened after an unopened, intact package of Jennie-O ground turkey was tested positive for salmonella contamination. The person in possession of this unopened package also tested positive for salmonella infection and the two samples were found to be closely related, genetically.

Since the recall is so large, the CDC warns that the products included in the recall have production dates of October 22, 2018, and October 23, 2018. More specifically, the following products have been listed in the recall:

1-lb package Jennie-O Italian Seasoned Ground Turkey with 11/12/18 “use or freeze by” date
3-lb package Jennie-O Ground Turkey 85% lean / 15% fat with 11/13/18 “use or freeze by” date
2.5-lb package Jennie-O Ground Turkey 93% lean / 7% fat with 11/13/18 “use or freeze by” date
3-lb packages of Stater Bros All Natural Ground Turkey 85% lean / 15% fat with 11/12/18 “use or freeze by” date
